Requirements

A visitor to Canada must fulfil the general requirements, which include having a valid travel document like a passport, being in good health, having no immigration or criminal history, maintaining ties to their home country (through family, employment, property, or financial assets), leaving Canada at the end of their authorized visit or stay, having sufficient funds for their stay in Canada, and possessing a valid eTA (or TRV-Temporary Resident Visa).

1. Travellers who require an eTA:

Foreign nationals not obliged to obtain a visa must have an eTA to travel to or transit via a Canadian airport. These explorers can arrive by car, bus, rail, or boat without giving an ETA.
Lawful permanent residents of the U.S. must have an eTA to travel to or transit via a Canadian airport. At check-in, they must present a valid Green Card as well as a valid passport.
Citizens of certain visa-required countries may be qualified to apply for an eTA instead of a visa. A visiting visa is required for anyone arriving by vehicle, bus, rail, or boat, including cruise liner.

2. Travellers who are ineligible to apply for an eTA:

Any Canadian citizen, including those with dual citizenship, must have a valid Canadian passport. Binational passports are accepted for travel by American-Canadian citizens.
An official permanent resident card or travel document is required for all Canadian permanent residents.
Important – Canadian Ex-pats: Your permanent resident (PR) status will never lapse. If you resided in Canada many years ago, you can still be considered a permanent resident. Find out more to prevent travel delays.
Visas are required for all travelers, including those who are not citizens of the United States.

3. Exempted travelers from the eTA mandate. For example:

Citizens of the United States are exempt from the eTA requirement, but must carry adequate identification, such as a valid U.S. passport.
