Canada’s Study Visa Extension program is aimed for international students who need an additional time on their study visa. A valid study permit is required to study in Canada for most international students. If their studies take longer than the duration of their permission, they will need to ask for an extension. An example of this might be a student transferring their tests to a more advanced degree program or needing additional time to complete their research for personal or other reasons. If a student fails to submit their application at least 30 days before their study permission expires, they will be required to do so within the 90-day grace period following their permit’s expiration.

Using an online access account, the application for a study permit extension must be submitted to IRCC.

Prior to the expiration of a student’s study permit, they must apply for an extension. If no other terms on their study permit have altered, the student can continue studying while waiting for the extension. 

Eligibility and Requirements

• Study Permit Expiration: The student’s study permit will expire either on the printed date or 90 days after completing their studies, whichever comes first.
• Restoration Application: If a student forgets to apply for an extension before the expiration of their study permit, they can submit a restoration application to restore their status by paying the restoration and study permit fees.
• Designated Learning Institution (DLI): International students can only apply for a study permit extension if their DLI is on the list. If the DLI is not on the list, the student must enroll at a DLI listed and supported by the IRCC.

• Study Permit Extension while Traveling: If a student plans to travel outside Canada and their study permit is expiring during their trip, they must submit a study permit extension application.
